سوال اینجا است: آیا سطح آب دریاها در حال افزایش است؟ IPCC در فصل پنج بخش اول گزارش سال 2007 خود به این پرسش پاسخ می دهد:

بله، شواهد بسیار محکمی وجود دارد که سطح دریاها در قرن بیستم افزایش یافته است و در حال حاضر با نرخ بیشتری در حال افزایش است. این تغییر به دو دلیل عمده روی می دهد: 

افزایش سطح دریا و تغییر اقلیم- نخست انبساط اقیانوس ها به دلیل افزایش دما،

- دوم به دلیل ذوب شدن یخ ها و کاهش سرزمین های یخی.

بررسی های علمی و اطلاعات ماهواره ای نشان می دهد که از سال 1993 این سطح به طور متوسط با نرخ 3 میلی متر در سال در حال افزایش بوده است. این عدد به طور متوسط برای قرن بیستم 1.7 میلی متر در سال بوده است.

پیش بینی ها نشان می دهد که تا پایان قرن حاضر این سطح بین 22 تا 44 سانتی متر بسته به موقعیت های جغرافیایی مختلف افزایش خواهد یافت. تصویر مقابل سه مقطع مختلف از تخمین گذشته، رکوردهای فعلی و پیش بینی برای آینده را نشان می دهد.

For the period before 1870, global measurements of sea level are not available. The grey shading shows the uncertainty in the estimated long-term rate of sea level change (Section 6.4.3). The red line is a reconstruction of global mean sea level from tide gauges (Section 5.5.2.1), and the red shading denotes the range of variations from a smooth curve. The green line shows global mean sea level observed from satellite altimetry. The blue shading represents the range of model projections for the SRES A1B scenario for the 21st century, relative to the 1980 to 1999 mean, and has been calculated independently from the observations. Beyond 2100, the projections are increasingly dependent on the emissions scenario (see Chapter 10 for a discussion of sea level rise projections for other scenarios considered in this report). Over many centuries or millennia, sea level could rise by several metres (Section 10.7.4).
